Can slide show be run on external display only?

Postby davet » Fri May 04, 2012 3:30 pm

I'm really surprised this hasn't been asked yet...at least I can't find it if it has.

I use a 4th Gen iPod Touch connected to a projector at events to display the photos I'm taking in real time. When I can plug in the iPod to an outlet for power, things work fantastic. Sometimes I'm dealing with a projector that is integrated into a venue and there is no power for the iPod.

I want to be able to run the slide show on an external projector but with the internal screen off to help save batteries. If you just switch off the iPod, the slide show stops. I've tried letting the screen time out with no luck and I've even tried the new backpack mode with no luck.

Is there a way to run the slide show only on the external display to get maximum battery life?

From iOS 5.0 Apple made a change to have the apps enter the background when the screen is turned off - and then close down after a while.

That is why I added the Backpack Mode feature. ..but yeah, that won't help you with the slideshows.

So far all I can say is go into the Settings app and turn the screen brightness all the way down. ..still not good enough, but you'll be using less battery.

I'm working on something that may be another solution, but that won't work until a newer version comes out (and that's not in the version currently in review).
I'll write back when I have more info for you..

Thanks!

I had a feeling that it had to do with iOS5. With a battery pack and the brightness turned down I should be able to squeeze things for now but unfortunately the Apple VGA adapter doesn't allow external power...and built in venue projectors rarely take anything but as they're wired into the walls.

I'll keep checking for a fix. Despite this, it's a fantastic product...keep up the great work!

Do any of the venues have HDMI inputs? The Apple HDMI adapter does have power in so that you can charge while using it. Worse case you could always plug a HDMI to VGA cord into that so you can still charge and connect to a VGA source when there isn't HD.
You've got to find what you love.

Thanks :)

I've now fixed this so you should be able to start a slideshow, enter Backpack Mode, and turn off the screen for the next release (version 2.3.2).

Should be out in 1-3 weeks if everything goes well..
