Wft-e1 adhoc to Shuttersnitch on iPad2

Postby Damo » Tue May 01, 2012 7:10 pm

Hi Guys,

Complete newbie here so bear with me.

I do event photography, I have a Canon 5D mk1, and an iPad 2.

To make it easier for clients to see the photos they would like printed out on the day, I would like the images to pop up on my iPad as Im taking them, so that they can swipe through them, making a quicker choice, and hopefully meaning I can get more clients through the door, (marquee door) so to speak.

I have just bought a WFT-E1 Canon Wireless Transmitter, the guy I bought it from didnt have an iPad, but showed me it working on my camera to his laptop, obviously he had already set up his network.

I am not very good at networking, the sheer amount of different settings confuse me, which unit should be set to what etc.

So, does anybody know where I can find a step by step guide to using the WFT-E1 with Shuttersnitch that explains things in very simple terms.

Do I have to connect to the WFT from my iPad in Settings first as a wifi point, or does it work the other way around.

When you get the idea it seems so simple. I have a Canon Camcorder that I use an Eye-Fi wifi card in, and have successfully gotten that working with Shuttersnitch, I want this WFT to work in the same way.

Many thanks for reading, I hope there is somebody that can help me out :)

I would start with viewtopic.php?f=19&t=780 and adjust the settings as needed for any differences between the WFT-E1 and the E4.

Hi MadDawgJ,

Sadly thats what I've been doing all night, and putting all those settings in, from each member that has given a step by step in turn, all I get is Failed To Join Network every time.

I hadnt updated the firmware on my 5D, but I have now, and still no joy, the only thing I can think of is these bloomin IP addresses, they say to put MY IP address in, but I'm not sure which one that would be ! The address I use to get in to my router ? But I dont want it to have anything to do with my home network, im mainly going to be using it away from any wifi network in the middle of a field photographing dogs ! :P.

I've copied the step by steps for the wft4 word for word and setting for setting, but as I said, I cant get the ipad to joing the network under settings.

Aaaarghhhh lol, a whole evening i'll never see again, shame its not as easy as pairing bluetooth ! :).

As long as you make your own network, any IP address is OK - as long as each device on it has a unique one for that particular network.

These examples show an infrastructure network, but In your case, you'd be setting up an ad-hoc network instead:

Just make sure that your WFT and iPad have different IPs. ..don't mind what's outside of your "network bubble" ;)

You say that the iPad fails to join the WFT ad-hoc network - don't you see it in the list of Wi-Fi networks, or does it give you a failure message when you try to connect to it? (or no message at all? Does it show a checkmark to the left of the network name?)

It see's it but fails to join. When I click to make it join, it asks for a username and password, but your step by step example only specifies a password, so ive been leaving the username blank ?

When you set up the ad-hoc network on your WFT, try picking a non-secured network. Then you shouldn't be asked for a username/password when joining it.

..and I think the auto-join settings are saved once you have a successful connection.

Its the early hours of the morning here in the UK, and im giving up for the night, TheBrew, Ive followed your steps about a eozen times now, and each time the same result, Unable To Join Network, I know the transmitter works ok, it was working on a laptop (macbook pro) in ad-hoc mode, it just doesnt seem to want to work with the ipad. Right now I think ebay is a good option for it ! Showing clients images on the back of a 5D mk1 isnt so bad is it ? :P

Seriously, I'll try again tomorrow, but I cant think of anything else to try that I've or already done.

Online, one or two people have had intermittent problems with their WFT-E1 transmitters, so it may be that I fall in to that category, but its not joined the network once, and these things are rarely hardware problems, but settings, I know if you get one digit out then nothing works, but its finding which setting is causing the problem !

Will keep you posted, and if I do manage to get it to work, I will post my exact settings on here for other people who may be using the quite old now WFT-E1, I cant understand why it still sells on Amazon for over £1000 !

Many thanks for your help, I didnt feel quite so 'alone' in my problem lol.

Getting late in Denmark too :) I hope a little sleep and and some fresh eyes will get you closer to a solution tomorrow - if not, feel free to brainstorm / ask for suggestions here.
I'm sure we can get it up and running!
