WFT-E2 II incompatable with IPAD2 (IPAD1OK)?

Postby BGaze » Sat Feb 25, 2012 8:56 pm

I have been trying to get ShutterSnitch, my IPAD2, my 1DMarkIV working with my WFT-E2 II transmitter with no success. I was told today that the Canon Transmitters worked OK with the IPAD1, but that there is an issue somehow with the IP addressing with the IPAD2. I have not been able to find any info on this incompatability. I was told that there is currently no workaround.

Has anyone been successful with this combination of gear and ShutterSnitch?

I would appreciate any guidance.

Thanks,

Bill

I don't see why it wouldn't work with both the iPad 1 and 2 - what is the problem exactly?

This information was reported to me by Cannon tech support via telephone on two different occasions over the past two weeks by two different support representatives.

Because of a recent illness I am unable to remember and write the details. The issue had something to do with the information in the initial contact header, http or www, or something similar.

Is there someone from Canon who can check this out?

I have no problem with my iPad 2 and a WFT-E4 II as long as I connect to my local Wi-Fi. Ad-hoc is where it trips up.

Do you have the option of joining a wireless network? In that case I'm sure you can get it up and running.

I want to use the configuration to do on-location in the field work, hence the camera to ipad direct. Idea is to show clients, models and sports customers near "real time" results, and evaluate my team photographers in action, not after the event. I have been able to connect both devices via a wireless LAN, direct is what I am trying to accomplish.
So direct is a non-starter or no can do? It is OK if it is not able to do it, I just need to understand that and look for alternative, can't continue to invest time in something that wont work. The ad-hoc process won't work, correct?
Is there an IPAD2 alternative, an Android device?

Thanks again,
Bill

I don't have a WFT-E2 II, but if the ad-hoc problem is the same as the one I'm having with my E4 - don't waste your time. I don't see it working until either Apple or Canon fixes the issue.

Sorry, ShutterSnitch is not available for Android. Maybe there's a similar app, but I must admit I haven't looked.

Since the ad-hoc issue is not necessarily a software problem (it's either the chipset, driver, or a WFT thing) you may want to test it before buying.

A workaround for the WFT + iPad 2 scenario could be a portable wireless router (or an AirPort Express, if you'll be shooting close to an outlet).

Portable battery powered routers are pretty cheap, here are some from Google search http://www.google.com/search?q=portable ... 24&bih=672

The router doesn't need to have internet access to make your setup work, but you can get one with Internet if you want to be able to upload the images from the locations as well. For example I use a small portable 4G router from Clear so as soon as I am done shooting I can start uploading the images and/or emailing them.

You can also use an Eye-Fi Card. Shoot RAW to the CF card and small JPG to the Eye-Fi Card and set the Eye-Fi Card to transfer to ShutterSnitch. As long as you don't plan on transfering RAWs with it any Eye-Fi Card will work. All of the X2 Eye-Fi Cards can create an adhoc network so you would only need camera, CF card, Eye-Fi X2 Card, iPad, and ShutterSnitch.

Is using the Eye-Fi Pro X2 in the Mark IV an alternative, keeping the IPad2, or is there the same ad-hoc issue?

The ad-hoc issue is related only to the Canon WFTs. I haven't heard of any problems with Nikon transmitters or Eye-Fi cards.
