Help - lost data on IPad

Postby Zigzagjon » Sun Apr 22, 2012 9:51 pm

Today I had to reinstall ShutterSnitch on my IPad (one)

The reason for this drastic action is an IPad problem - sometimes Apps seem to fail to update and come up with a 'Waiting..' message when I try to run them (it seems to happen quite frequently - and not only with ShutterSnitch)

Anyway. The only way I have found to get around this problem is to delete the App and then Reinstall the App

This work around seems fine - until I did it with ShutterSnitch - I lost all my photos

Any idea how I get them back?

Yeah, deleting apps will delete all their data. :(

Do you back up your iPad to iCloud or with iTunes from time to time?

Yes I do
I was thinking that I could restore from either ITunes or ICloud (although I need to work out how to do it), but I thought I would go down this route first
So, any suggestions on how I sort this mess out?

The easy way would be a restore. I would guess it's important that you haven't made another backup since you deleted the app.

iTunes: Connect your iPad and right click it in the left pane in iTunes. Choose "Restore from Backup"

iCloud: Go into the Settings app and go to General -> Reset -> Erase All Content and Settings. When it's done, you can choose to restore from an iCloud backup when you go through the initial setup steps.

....and just to save my own skin: if anything goes wrong, please don't blame me ;)

If you don't want to restore, you can find the backups on your computer here:

Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Windows Vista / 7: C:\Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\

BUT, depending on your settings, the files are either anonymized by name or encrypted. The default setting is no encryption, so if you just need the photos, you can dig through the files and rename them to JPG or the raw (look for file sizes that match your JPEGs / RAWs). Tiresome, but it's an option.

Also, if you have a Mac, maybe you should consider getting ShutterSnitch Backup (it's free). It'll automatically back up all your files when the computer and iOS device is connected to the same network.

Ok, thank you. I will have a go and I will let u know what happens

BTW. I use Dropbox to hold all my selected important pics and was thinking the other day how nice it would be (well, for me anyway) to be able to sync all my ShutterSnitch photos with Dropbox
