Where does SS Backup get the phone name?

Postby ATJ » Wed Aug 16, 2023 12:43 am

I just got a new iPhone. I migrated it from my old phone. One of the first things I did was to go into Settings on the phone and rename it from "ATJ iPhone 6s" (the old phone) to "ATJ iPhone 14".

It shows up as "ATJ iPhone 14" on the phone itself, when I connect it to my Mac, and as a Personal Hotspot.

ShutterSnitch Backup still sees it as "iPhone" and created a folder just as "iPhone" for my first backup.

Where do I need to change the name?

As you may have noticed, Apple has been very focused on privacy over the past many years. They've been removing all ways of "fingerprinting" a device. No unique identifiers - and that includes the name of the device.

When iOS was young, that name was available to show you in ShutterSnitch Backup, but now all we developers get is "iPad" or "iPhone" when we query the device name.

OK, so why do my 4s and 6s still show in ShuuterSnitch Backup as ATJ iPhone 4S and ATJ iPhone 6s? Is it an iOS 16 thing?

Interesting that it still displays the name of the device to the whole world (well at least those in WiFi range) as a Personal Hotspot.

Yes, it depends on the iOS version. I don't remember how far back it goes, but it's a few years for sure.
