File Compression…

Postby Cloughie » Tue Sep 06, 2022 2:07 pm

Hi.
I transfer the images to my phone via Shuttersnitch.
If I share direct from the app via whatsapp the file size is greatly reduced
I know whatsapp compresses the file but if I save the image to
my camera roll first then whatsapp its compression Is far less.
Any ideas how to stop the direct sharing files being so compressed
Thanks

Do you by any chance have watermarking turned on for sharing? (Collection overview -> Options -> Watermarks) That'll cause recompression.

Adjusting the image (cropping/color adjustments) will also cause a recompression. ..But then it doesn't make sense that your camera roll exports are better.

If you do need to adjust the image or add a watermark, your other option is to turn up the default compression quality - you'll find that in the Settings -> General -> Picture recompression quality.

If the file is untouched, I just hand over the original to iOS's share sheet. It would surprise me if iOS recompresses the photo though. :/

I'd be less surprised if it's WhatsApp's import function that handles importing from the Photos app differently than from a share sheet (any type of file can come from a share sheet).

You could perhaps give drag-and-drop a try? Tap and hold the photo in the filmstrip until you can drag it, then swipe over to the WhatsApp ..app.. using another finger and drop it where it should go?

Thanks for the quick reply

1 Thanks I have turned off the Watermark sharing buttons on all of the buttons listed.
2 Compression quality is set to 100.
3 Drag and drop appears the same.

I have attached images for you to view

Yeah, I'm sure that's not a ShutterSnitch issue.

Something you can try to verify that it is indeed WhatsApp squashing your photos when not importing directly from the Photos app, is to share a photo from ShutterSnitch and "Save to Files" instead of picking WhatsApp. That, or perhaps AirDrop it to a nearby computer.

The file that is saved to the Files app is the exact bytes handed over to WhatsApp when sharing. So do that, and check if the file looks good. I just tried that and on my side it's untouched.

Yes when i send it to drop box or camera roll its full size around 6mb.......

if Shared direct through WA image size is 81 KB.

If i save the image to Camera roll and then share to WA the images is 258kb reduced but larger.

Thanks for your help.

One of my clients uses Box can that be added to file sharing?

Thanks Huw

The Share sheet is a system sheet - I just hand over a file to it and iOS presents the options. So you should ask Box if they can add a share-handler to their app.
