Problem with GFX100 wifi and ipad tethering

Postby Pnad » Fri Dec 11, 2020 6:32 pm

Using a portable wifi router I can tether just fine with a GFX100 (raw + small jpegs) but there is one little quirk than I can’t get rid off. If I shoot a burst, all the photo will transfer to shuttersnitch but the camera lamp indicator will often turn to red/green flashing. Only after a burst, it doesn’t happen in single shot.

The problem is the camera will forever stay into that green/red flashing state (it means a picture is waiting to upload) and the pictures still all continue to transfer just fine but I can’t access many menu items and can’t review pictures in camera will in that states. I can still shoot and everything still transfer, only evertime I will shutdown the camera while in that state, the lamp turn solid orange and the camera completely freezes and need to remove the battery to reboot.

I even waited up to 1h while solid orange and the camera was getting real hot. So it really just frozen and not transfering or writing anything.

What could cause the camera to turn into that red/green flashing state only when shooting burst? Its weird because no photo is missing on the ipad when that happens.

Hmm. I don't have a GFX100 (but good to hear that it ..almost.. works).

I'll see if I can reproduce it with my X-T2 and get back to you - currently waiting for the battery to charge though.. :)

Wow. I'm having a ton of connectivity issues here. On both iOS 13 and 14. I have no idea why. The camera just dies mid-transfer / mid-idle-communication and starts blinking. And I haven't even gotten around to testing bursts yet.

Same weirdness on a 2 year old version of ShutterSnitch too, so it must be related to my wi-fi environment or the camera. Gah. Battery gone bad?

I don't know if troubleshooting this is going to take hours, days, or weeks, but I'll get back to you when I know more.

Alright. Turns out I can keep it "stable" by not really *holding* the camera when I take the photos. Must be the antenna.

I could still make it fail by snapping a lot of pictures in rapid succession though.

So the next step was to see if the case was the same when using Fujifilm's own app. ..And it is. At least on my side. The signal strength or antenna is *bad*. Bad bad. I remember it being bad before, but it seems like it's worse now. I wonder if it's all the other wi-fi networks I'm surrounded by. And once it fails, it doesn't rejoin the wi-fi - with ShutterSnitch. But with Fujifilm's X Acquire app, it eventually just drops out and then after a while rejoin the wi-fi network. But I've also seen it die completely as you described, and all I could do was to pull the battery.

I suspect that in addition to the signal strength (maybe on my side only), the camera probably locks up because it simply runs out of memory. Just guessing of course, but it would make sense that it works fine when we play nice and just take a photo at a time; But when we burst it has to queue transfers, handle incoming sensordata, process and save files, all while keeping the wi-fi conversation *and* transfers going all at the same time.

Does burst shooting work fine on your side if you send to the Fujifilm X Acquire app?

Update: Very interesting, I think I'm on to something. I was wondering why, even though I'd turned the dial to allow me to shoot in burst, it didn't. So while I tested I just pressed the shutter button rapidly. This made me think ..what if Fujifilm actually *disables* bursts when entering wireless tethered shooting exactly because it can't handle the pressure? So I turned wireless tethering off - and bingo, now I can burst away!

I will try if I get the same problem with X Aquire. I can definitely choose burst mode on the gfx while in wireless tethering mode.

Also, I think I found something interesting with the network inspector, I have an error message when it goes into red/green mode, I will copy paste it here tomorrow.

Looking forward to hearing more. My guess would be that they've forgotten to limit the burst functionality - but who knows, it's a hell of a camera.. :)

If it does fail, are the photos gigantic? Does it also fail if you burst the smallest size JPEGs?

Update on my weird connection issues: Oops. Found the problem. Turns out the camera was given the same IP as a server on my network which is set up with a static IP.. Fixing that, my connection is stable and so far I haven't been able to make it trip up taking photos in rapid succession.

This is the error message I get, but I can still shoot and pictures will still transfer and nothing is missed, all photos are there.

Oh and my renaming action solved nothing.
But the camera is stuck into that red/green waiting to upload state.

Hm, I wonder if it sends that 'access denied' message if it's too busy at that moment.

Does it still do the green+red blinking if you turn off saving Raw files in the camera setup?

And I'm still interested in knowing if it also happens with the Fujifilm X Acquire software.

Just tested X Aquire on my mac and its working fine even after multiple long burst, it goes back to green blinking once its done.

Forgot to try out shuttersnitch with jpg only and don’t have the ipad with me right now.

Alright, so it should be fixable.

Since I'll never be able to afford this camera, would you be interested in helping me figure it out by installing some debugging builds of ShutterSnitch?
