If you need a completely white background, you need to switch to the Zoom tab.
In Crop mode, the "background" is actually foreground-borders indicating the crop. Pinching/rotating the photo will crop the photo to those borders. The slight transparency is a way to see if the photo is currently cropped.
While I have the crop mode pen out, why not include a few tips: :)
* Double tap the image to reset the zoom back to 100%.
* Two-finger double tap to rotate the photo to the nearest 90 degree angle.
Update: Geez, I just discovered the editor doesn't restore which tab was previously selected, so it always starts in Crop mode. Wow, that's bad. I'll make sure it remembers in the next version!
